After graduating from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a BA in biology, Dr. Kohn moved to UI in Chicago for his MD. After an internship in internal medicine and completing a residency in psychiatry at Brown University, he turned to the Columbia epidemiology program for his fellowship. He then attained his master’s degree in epidemiology at the Columbia University School of Public Health in New York City.
An internationally recognized psychiatric authority, Dr. Robert Kohn provides mental health care to older adults in his Providence, Rhode Island solo practice. Since becoming a physician in 1985, Dr. Robert Kohn has served in more than a dozen hospitals and clinics and taught in three institutions of higher learning.
Dr. Robert Kohn has several honors to his credit, such as the John Templeton Foundation’s Exemplary Papers Award. In 2003 he received the Dr. Ramón Corbalán Melgarejo Award for public health research from the Sociedad Medica de Santiago in Chile. In 2009 he was recognized for his research on mental health in Guatemala by the University of San Carlos. In 2019, the American Psychiatric Association gave him its Manfred S. Guttmacher Award in forensic psychiatry. He is a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
He has worked with several other agencies, such as the World Health Organization, as an adviser and consultant for activities on mental health strategies for the Americas. An international traveler, Dr. Kohn’s research interests include Alzheimer’s disease, transcultural psychiatry, and global mental health.
